Time for a heart checkup

When you want to know about the health of a certain part of your physical body, where do you go? Probably to a specialist in that area. A pulmonologist would know best about your lungs, an orthodontist helps you straighten your smile, a podiatrist would know best about your feet. When it comes to the health of your inner being, your spiritual heart, God is the only one who can discern and know what is really going on in it.

The heart is deceitful above all [things], and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Jeremiah 17:9

Just as we need to periodically have health checkups with a physician, we also need to regularly check in with The Great Physician in heaven. Pray and ask him to reveal to you what is in your heart!

What is truly in your heart? What do you give your heart to? What does your heart need?

These are questions that can only be answered from the Word of God.

Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

Proverbs 4:23

What does it mean to keep your heart? It means protect diligently. To guard above all else. Why is it so important to do so with our heart? Because that is the very core of our existence. From our heart overflows all issues of life.

What are the issues of life? Everything. Every conversation we have, each decision we make, these all come from our heart. If our heart is not fully given to know wisdom, we will make foolish choices. Our issues of life will not go well. In other words, if we don’t read and study God’s word (wisdom) we will make foolish choices. We will continue living life to serve only ourselves and our worldly desires.

Have you given God your whole heart?

And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.

Ecclesiastes 1:17

When we try to live our life with our heart given partially to God (wisdom) and partially to madness and folly (sinfulness), this only leads to a vexation of spirit (confusion!).

Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.

Psalm 119:34

It may seem to some like a sacrifice to serve God with your whole heart. To do this means setting aside (sacrificing) self and selfish desires in order to live the life He wants you to live! But can I tell you something? You will love that life! When you are in the center of God’s will, there is no better place. Peace and joy abound, and you won’t want anything else!

Thy word have I hid in mine heart, thy I might not sin against thee.

Psalm 119:11

Memorize scripture. Daily seek out God’s will for you through his word. Constantly reconfirm through Him that you are living right where He wants you to be. Hide his word in your heart so that no matter where you are, and no matter what comes your way, your issues of life will be handled with wisdom.
