Singing in the Night

Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.

Psalm 42:8

Have you ever dreaded nighttime? Why is it that when night hits everything seems worse? Colds are more miserable at night. Sadness hits harder when we try to sleep. Loneliness is realized more than ever when the lights are out. Perhaps this is why there are so many verses in the Bible about singing praises at night. God knows your deepest fears, and your most painful hurts. He wants to soothe them. He has given us a prescribed method to tap into this joy and peace He provides!

I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with mine own heart: and my spirit made diligent search.

Psalm 77:6

Overcoming negativity is no easy task. It requires that we use all three parts of ourselves. (God created us in his image, a triune being. 1Thessalonians 5:23, Genesis 1:26-27) Our body (in Psalm 77:6 above, this would be our brain remembering), our soul (our heart), and our spirit. Do you feel like you can’t get past a sadness in your life? Or you can’t get over your fears? Check to see if you have activated all three areas of your life in this matter. Remember your song…Search your spirit to see if something is amiss…and ponder the condition of your heart.

God wants you to have a song in the night!

Ye shall have a song, as in the night…and gladness of heart…

Isaiah 30:29

BUT…

It is possible to allow things, people, situations, etc. to rob you of your gladness! If joy is gone, there will likely be no singing.

And gladness is taken away, and joy out of the plentiful field; and in the vineyards there shall be no singing, neither shall there be shouting…

Isaiah 16:10

So how do we get it back?

Remember the Lord. He is your song. (Exodus 15:2 The LORD is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation: he is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation; my father’s God, and I will exalt him.) When you can’t sing, play good gospel music. Get somebody to sing to you! (I promise it helps. I am speaking from experience.) Read scripture. Get your mind off the fear, the sadness, the grief, and re-focus yourself on the ONE who can take that away. Check your heart. See if there is an area of your life you need to turn over to God. Meditate on the GOOD things…whatsoever is pure, lovely, honest, etc. And thank God for all the good in your life.

Praying you have sweet rest tonight, and that your nighttime singing will once again come easy. ~Kristin
