I’ll be the first to admit, I am uncomfortable speaking to strangers. I always have been. Call it social anxiety, call it just plain socially awkward – whatever words you want to use, I will claim and admit to it all day! The problem with this, however, is this attribute often leads people to assume I am stuck up. Let’s be honest, that’s not exactly the image you want to present when you are a Christian. You would much rather portray yourself as friendly, approachable, and joyful, as this makes witnessing a lot easier.
What does the Bible say my responsibility is as a follower of Christ?
The Bible is very clear about what our job is after we get saved. Acts 1:8 tells us to be witnesses in all the parts of the earth. Does this mean each of us is to visit every part of the world to personally share Christ? No, but we should definitely do our part to facilitate this opportunity for those who can go. What it means for the rest of us is that we must do our part here at home.
And as ye go, preach…
Matthew 10:6
Suggestions for sharing Christ ‘as you go’
First things first: There is no way around it, you must always be prepared to “give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you”. (1Peter 3:15) Study your Bible enough (and seek the advice of others if needed!) to know what you believe and why you believe it. It is imperative that you know how to, and are comfortable enough to lead someone to the Lord with scripture! (Message me for resources, and I am always happy to chat about this.)
Tell others about where your blessings come from.
A preacher once said that soul winning is simply one poor man telling another poor man from whence he got his bread. When people tell you how well behaved your children are, or when you are given a compliment on how lovely your home is, always give the credit to the Lord! No matter what someone’s compliments to you are, you can always find a creative way to bring God into the conversation. After all, it is from God that we receive all good things in our life. (James 1:17) This may not be easy at first, but you will find if you are determined to make this a habit in your life, that you become more comfortable with it over time.
Use your children as a witnessing tool.
If you have young children, this one is for you! Your children would probably be tickled with the prospect of handing out gospel tracts to people! You could also have them hide tracts around a store, place them in napkin holders at a restaurant, leave them on public restroom counters for people to find, etc. You will likely find that most people are more receptive to taking a tract from a child, than they are from an adult. We tend to assume people are trying to “sell us” something when we are randomly approached in a store by an adult with a pamphlet.
Use your social media accounts!
Everyone (just about) is on some form of social media these days. It is so easy to reach others with just the click of a button. Consider typing out and posting your testimony of how you got saved. Share a Bible verse a day. If you are not so eloquent, and are afraid you will botch it up, browse Pinterest, or other outlets online for scriptural truths you can copy and post, or share with others. (Make sure to give photo & copyright credit where credit is due!)
Send cards to encourage others.
Whether it’s a birthday card, a congratulations card, or simply a get-well-soon wish, everybody loves a personal greeting! Why not start a new habit of sending cards to people? You can purchase variety boxes of cards containing verses, or Biblical encouragement for a very reasonable price on http://www.christianbook.com or at http://www.hobbylobby.com. Be sure to let others know you are praying for them, and trusting God to bless in their situations. (Don’t forget to ACTUALLY pray for them!)
Just be happy.
These days, all you have to do to show you are not like the rest of the world is to keep a smile on your face. Be happy. Be genuinely happy. Say please and thank you. Give forgiveness and grace. Volunteer to help others. Just be kind. Others will wonder why you and your family are so different, and what your secret to happiness is. This opens a door for you to share Christ. The world needs the joy and peace you have found in your savior!
What are some of your favorite ways to show others the love of Jesus? Have you figured out the perfect way to start a “gospel” conversation with those you come in contact with? Please let us know in the comments!
