Be careful little eyes what you see!

Did you learn that song as a child? There is so much truth to it! “Oh be careful little eyes what you see, Oh be careful little eyes what you see; for your father up above is looking down in love, so be careful little eyes what you see!” It has been said the eyes are the window/gateway to the soul. I agree 100%. And I believe the Bible teaches that it is of utmost importance that we guard our eyes, mind, and therefore our heart from things around us that are not what God wants for our life.

The greatest fall of all humanity started with the eyes.

For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

Genesis 3:5-7

In Genesis 3:5-7 we read a conversation between Eve and the serpent, or Satan. Go back up and read how many times the word “eyes” or “saw” are used, or a reference to sight is made. Satan knew if he could get Eve to look at the tree of knowledge of good and evil long enough, he would have her right where he wanted her. He used something she had seen many times before to persuade her that her life was lacking. See, the thing is, that tree had always been there. God created it in the beginning, along with all the other trees. The trouble surrounding that tree didn’t start until Satan got in the mix. Ever so subtly, Satan convinced Eve (and Adam) to start “seeing things differently”.

Keep your eyes on Christ!

My friend, opportunities for sin and temptation abound! These snares of the devil are all around us every day. Satan would love to get you to start looking at these little temptations a little longer, and in just a little bit of a different way than perhaps you did before. Once he convinces you to take your eyes off Christ and focus them on a distraction, that’s when you are in trouble. What goes in our eyes, reaches our mind and affects our soul. We must practice keeping our eyes in the Word of God, and our minds on things above, so we don’t lose our right focus!

Satan would love to use things we can see to make us doubt the thing we cannot see. (God.)

Need more convincing?

In the book of Genesis, Lot saw the land towards Sodom, and pitched his tent in a direction that was ungodly.

In the book of 2 Samuel, David saw Bathsheba and committed sins in order to have her for his own.

In the book of Genesis Sarah saw fit to do things her way, rather than waiting on the Lord. She told Abraham to have a child with Hagar. She then despised Hagar when she saw conception had occurred.

In 1 Samuel 8 Israel desired to be like all other nations they saw, and have an earthly king rule over them. This led to Israel’s being “put on a shelf” as God’s chosen people.

In Matthew 7:3-5, we see someone so obsessed with the sin he sees in his brethren, he can’t even see the sin in his own life.

In Matthew 5 we are instructed that if our right eye offends us, we should pluck it out! (If there is some area of your life that you see is causing you to sin, or get farther from God, cut that area out of your life!)

Thank you! We all need the reminder daily to be cautious with what we feed ourselves!! (Through our eyes and ears especially!)
