A study on sheep and shepherds

So many times in God’s word we are referred to as sheep and He is our good shepherd. We all can visualize what that relationship looks like. We are the ones who need the shepherd’s constant guidance and care. But I wanted to really study out a sheep. What are their characteristics? And I also wanted to know what a shepherd’s actual job entails. Boy has it blessed my heart applying this science and “real, practical info” to my spiritual relationship with Christ!!

And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things.

Mark 6:34

Did you know…

Sheep are prone to fear, frustration, jealousy, and being easily led astray.

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7

When God becomes our shepherd, we no longer have to be a slave to our fear. He has given us power through him to overcome this world. He also gives us his spirit of love, so jealousy no longer is our motivator. And our sound mind comes from learning, through his word, where he wants to guide us.

Sheep are easily killed by enemies when not close by the shepherd. They cannot right themselves if turned on their backs.

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” 1 Peter 5:8

Praise God he fights my battles for me! I can’t live this life on my own. I have to stick close to him, or this wicked world and all it’s temptations will devour me. And when I fall down, I am forever grateful that he is there time after time to pick me up and set my feet on the right path again.

Sheep are stubborn to a fault. Lack wisdom and discernment in choosing where to eat and drink.

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.” Proverbs 9:10

Sheep often eat anything and everything around them. Often consuming poisonous things, to their own demise. One of the Holy Spirit’s roles in our lives is to help us discern right from wrong. You may want to go somewhere that feels and looks fun and enjoyable. But is that place what you should be feeding on?? He will guide us to good things if we listen and allow him.

The shepherd is on call around the clock.

“…for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” Hebrews 13:5

Praise God He is always on call. He hears our cries. He sees us when we have gone astray, and is just waiting for us to turn to him!
