The commandment to love one another is possibly one of the hardest lessons from scripture for us to learn and live out in our lives. Dozens of times in the New Testament alone we are told to love one another. God must have known we needed the continual reminder!
In the book of 2 John we see a letter written to “the elect lady”. This is a woman who is godly. She has raised her children to walk in the truth. This woman is probably a leader among the ladies in her Church. Yet the Lord still impressed upon John’s heart to write this letter to her, with a friendly reminder enclosed.
And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.
2 John 5
Loving others is how we show that we are God’s child. The lost world does not love one another. Just take a look around. People are selfish, power-hungry, and tripping over one another to get ahead. Does the world look and feel like a loving place to you?
I encourage you to read the whole book of 2 John (it is only one chapter long) and search your heart. Find yourself in this elect lady, and learn from what John had to say to her. We could all use a reminder, especially in this day we live in, to love our fellow man.
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
John 13:35
